This One Thing Made a Huge Difference in My Life

In the latest episode of Pattern Cognition with Sid Mofya, I reflect on a simple yet transformative childhood experience that shaped my future. This story is a testament to the power of small, intentional actions and their ability to create lasting impacts.

Growing up, my father, an artisan, had a ritual that seemed ordinary at the time but proved to be extraordinary in its influence. Every evening, he would spend 20 to 30 minutes with me. Using blank cards, he would write the name of an object on one side and draw a beautiful picture of it on the other. These cards weren’t just tools for entertainment—they became my introduction to reading, writing, and speaking English.

By the time I was a young child, I was far ahead of my peers in literacy skills. This early advantage opened doors to better schools and created opportunities that shaped my career and life path. Reflecting on it now, I realize how disproportionate the impact of this small, consistent act was compared to the time and resources it required.

Key Takeaways from the Episode:

  1. The Power of Small Actions
Life-changing outcomes don’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s the small, consistent efforts that make the biggest difference.

  2. Intentional Habits Create Ripples
My father’s daily commitment didn’t just teach me a skill—it instilled confidence and provided a foundation for future success.

  3. What’s Your “One Thing”?
Everyone has a story of a small act that made a big difference. Whether it’s a mentor’s advice, a routine you followed, or a gesture from a loved one, identifying and appreciating these moments can inspire future actions.

This episode is not just a personal reflection—it’s a challenge to think about the small, meaningful actions we can take in our own lives or for others. How can you create a ripple effect with your time and energy?

Here's one thing that happened in my childhood that made a huge difference to my life. My dad was an artisan and whenever he came back from work, he would spend 20 minutes to half an hour with me every day. He was an artist and so he would get these blank cards and he would write on one side the name of something and then the other side would draw this amazing picture.

So I had, we had all these picture cards. And he taught me to read and write and speak in English, um, long before my peers around me did. And that one intervention made a huge difference in the kind of opportunities that I could get, the schools that I could go into. Um, and I credit a lot of what I've been able to do since to that one thing that my dad did.

And I'm super grateful. What is one thing that happened to you that had a huge impact on your life? Disproportionate to the amount of time and investment that was made.
