I Don’t Think of Africa as 54 Countries

In today’s episode of Pattern Cognition, we challenge the conventional mindset of viewing Africa as a collection of 54 individual countries. Instead, we explore a transformative framework that reimagines the continent as a dynamic ecosystem of clusters, corridors, and energy systems.

The political borders that have defined Africa for over a century are often arbitrary and limiting. Economic activity, innovation, and growth don’t adhere to these lines—they gravitate toward clusters, areas where talent and capital converge to create vibrant hubs of opportunity. These clusters are connected by corridors—networks of infrastructure, trade, and relationships that power economic momentum across regions.

In this episode, we also explore the concept of energy systems, which serve as the lifeblood of these clusters and corridors, driving the activity that sustains them. By adopting this perspective, entrepreneurs, investors, and changemakers can unlock a deeper understanding of Africa’s potential and identify opportunities that transcend traditional borders.

Whether you’re an investor seeking new markets, a policymaker, or a creative entrepreneur looking for inspiration, this episode offers fresh insights into viewing Africa through the lens of interconnected growth.

Tune in to discover a powerful framework for understanding and investing in the future of Africa.

I don't like to think of Africa as 54 countries, and this is why it's severely limiting the borders. Even though they've persisted for the last a hundred years, are very artificial. Um, I prefer to think of Africa as an ecosystem consisting of clusters and the clusters are where a lot of the economic activity is centered around.

So they attract capital and talent. I think of them as corridors, corridors that connect those clusters, and I also think of it as energy systems everywhere across the continent. that fire up those clusters and those corridors. I think that's a more useful framework for thinking about investing across the continent than thinking of it as countries.
